Director of Human Resources

JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Human Resources and Talent Acquisition is accountable, as a leader on the Symbia Logistics’ (Symbia) Executive Team, to rapidly scale-up both our Human Resources (HR) and Recruiting capacities, so that our capabilities in hiring are world class, sourcing A-Players who know how to operate in a highly professional manner.  In order to foster an environment consistent with the company mission and values, the Director of Human Resources and Talent Acquisition is responsible for development and implementation of policies, programs, legal compliance, recruiting and strategic organizational development.

You will provide the leadership, vision, planning and execution in the effective formulation and management of the Human Resources department.   Keeping pace with our significant growth, you will ensure that the Human Resources department maintains compliance with all labor regulations while also helping to facilitate efficient operations to meet business needs.   

You will take ownership and lead all aspects of the recruiting and HR processes, driving Symbia into a more proactive and effective recruiting function with a focus on scalability and quality. You will take the lead on major projects such as employer branding, on/off board process design and implementing, talent mapping, and much more. You’ll have all departments working side-by-side to smoothly transition the onboarding of the new hires you’ve shepherded through the interview process into production and into a positive experience working at Symbia, long-term.  You will also be responsible for filling key executive and professional positions.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the development of a high performance, positive culture guided by Symbia values and leadership principals.
  • In partnership with the Executive Team provides strategic organizational development leadership by developing programs and policies utilizing best practices.
  • Oversees the development of benefit programs, compensation structures, performance management, employee relations, recruitment and retention, training, risk management and other programs.
  • Provide vision, leadership, planning, project coordination and management for the development of a cost-effective department while facilitating efficient operations to meet business needs within the organization.
  • Manages the HR budget for effective use of resources and participates in the budgeting process.
  • Oversees direction of Compliance and Quality initiatives.
  • Develops and educates leadership by gathering facts, diagnosing problems, providing solutions and offering objective assistance and guidance on employee- related issues.
  • Provides employee support in complex or sensitive HR-related situations requiring independent judgement and detailed knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.
  • Oversees the recruitment, selection, placement, and orientation of exempt, non-exempt, and hourly associates to achieve required staffing levels and selection of the best qualified candidates.
  • Takes full responsibility over all employee onboarding, off-boarding, performance management, coaching, compensation and rewards initiatives.
  • Leads and oversees the implementation, administration, and dissemination of information regarding all Human Resources functions including employment, training, management development, associate programs, compensation, and benefits for exempt and non-exempt, ensuring compliance with state, federal, and company policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Compliance and knowledge of California state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Appropriately handle all types of confidential human resources matters and investigations.
  • Negotiate contracts for services and meeting venues.
  • Manage to stretch targets for time-to-fill for Directors and above of 60 days, Managers of 60 days, and non-managers of 30 days.
  • Internal Fill Rate maintained at 50% for all Manager and above positions.
  • Function as a positive change agent respecting the company's culture and values while challenging the status quo.
  • Support the merger & acquisition process with particular focus on cultural integration.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in conferences and educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Directs all online recruiting outlets, including but not limited to, Facebook, Instagram, Google, JazzHr.
  • Build presentations and meeting materials related to the initiatives for which he/she is responsible.
  • Perform other duties as required to meet organizational and departmental goals.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in related field; with Advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive HR experience in a fast paced, manufacturing or production environment.
  • Graduate degree a plus.
  • SHRM certification or other HR certifications a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of compensation and benefits best practices and regulations
  • Proven track record of creating process efficiencies in a business experiencing extensive growth
  • A high-energy individual who possesses a collaborative work style and a roll-up your sleeves attitude
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; proven ability to communicate effectively and influence all levels of staff
  • Ability to stand firm and remain committed when necessary, and facilitates discussion and understanding when tough decisions must be made and executed
  • Adept at handling multiple competing priorities and duties in a fast-paced, results-driven, rapidly changing environment
  • History of success in the development and management of the HR function in a fast-paced, results-oriented culture, including talent acquisition, training, organization development, and workforce planning and resource allocation.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
    • Specifically and most importantly, the state of California
  • Experience in the development and implementation of highly integrated process solutions - a standard work mind set is a must along with the ability to apply lean tools to systematic problem solving.
  • Experience with cloud based payroll and human capital management software solutions for medium to large sized organizations.
  • Keen insight into human and organization behavior.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability of standing and walk for extended periods of time (at least 2 hours straight, four times in an 8 hour day).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The day to day work will be in an office setting with occasional visits to plants.
  • The work environment within the plant could consist of:
    • occasional extreme temperature shifts ranging from very cold to very hot
    • exposure to dust and loud noise (hearing protection is provided) 
    • exposure to moving mechanical parts and moving forklifts

COMPUTER / LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Spoken and written Spanish beneficial but not required
  • Advanced to expert-level with Microsoft Office applications

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Must be willing and able to travel throughout the United States and Canada.
